The new restrictions being placed on First Division teams in the one stream format next year could spell the end for giant killers, like Baroka FC and Black Leopards, in cup competitions in future.
Jomo Cosmos boss Jomo Sono points out that if First Division teams are forced to field five Under-23 players and are restricted to three foreigners in their squads, they will be at a distinct disadvantage against their Premiership opponents next season.
“I don’t understand the logic of the new regulations,” 'Bra J' says in an interview published on Ezenkosi’s website.
Sono points out that a First Division team in the Nedbank Cup against Orlando Pirates, for example, will have to play under those restrictions, while Pirates would have the advantage of playing with five foreigners and a whole team that could be older and more experienced.
“There’s no fairness there. The First Division should not be a development league; it should have equal professional status as the Premiership.
"In England all the players who feature in the Premier League for England are Premier League players, so it should be the same here.
“They should not force people to go into development. If they want to have proper development they must have a proper Under-16 national league, Under-14 national league and Under-18 national league. That is proper development.
“You cannot turn semi-professional outfits like First Division teams into development teams; there’s no fairness in that."
With no clarity yet on what the promotion\relegation set-up will be, Sono is also adamant that the existing Play-off structure must be scrapped.
“The ideal situation is that two teams must go up from the NFD and two must be relegated from the Premiership.
“We must forget about this Play-off nonsense. I was not happy with the Play-offs because it’s not fair on Bay United, or Cosmos, but what can you do? There’s a constitution which we have to follow.”
“If you win promotion to the Premier League with the same structure [next year] what are you going to do with the Under-23 players in your possession, do you tell them to go? Because obviously you won’t use them; you don’t want them because you’ve been promoted, so they must go. So, where do they go? I don’t think the system is fair.”
